Let’s make doilies a thing again! I’m telling you that Grandma had the right idea all along. Seriously, handmade doilies are ridiculously versatile. You can use them as hot pads to protect your table from scorch marks or put them under plant pots to soak up extra water. They also look great hanging up on the wall or as a centerpiece underneath candles or a vase. But wait there’s more! You can also use them as placemats or table settings. You can even use them as rugs if you make them big enough! On top of all these practical uses, they are also just plain pretty to look at. Instantly add pizzazz to an entryway table or nightstand. Fancy up the coffee table or decorate your dining area. The possibilities are endless!
1.Chunky Crochet Doily
Designer: Petals to Picots
Not all doilies are made with fingering weight yarn! This chunky doily design reminds me of the sun. The bright green color makes me smile and is sure to brighten up your space. There are even two different sizes to choose from!
2. Pineapple Doily
Designer: Craft Passion
Make this classic Pineapple Doily to add some old-world charm to afternoon tea or brunch on the patio. The vintage look is intricate and stunning. This doily would make a wonderful family heirloom to pass on to the next generation. You can follow the chart or the written pattern.
3. Frost Nova
The Frost Nova doily is a kaleidoscope of shapes. There are a lot of things that remind me of snowflakes in this design, so I can see why it is called Frost Nova. You’ll notice that there is also a round of pineapple motifs.
4. Chunky Doily Rug
Designer: Craft Foxes
Take the doily making craft to the extreme with this stunning doily rug crocheted with 3 strands of yarn held together. This rug is a total statement piece that will surely garner lots of compliments! The light monochrome makes me think of a snowflake, but I could also totally see this as a sun in bright yellow or orange. Maybe for baby’s nursery?!
5. Gift Bag Doily
Designer: Brenda Stratton for Talking Crochet
Hold a gift bag closed in style- and keep the contents a secret – with this marvelous gift bag doily. Unlike wasteful tissue paper, this doily can be used over and over again. This piece would look extra festive in bright colors or shiny metallic thread!
6. Pansy Doily
Designer: Sweet Home by Lulu
Doilies don’t have to be monochrome. This Pansy Doily is a lovely example of how adding color into your piece can transform the whole look. The design for the pansies is spot on and the alternating blue and yellow colors really make this doily stand out.
7. Doily Amal
Designer: Lena Masterica
Do something different! A square doily shape is very refreshing and looks great! Plus, this square doily pattern uses more textured and solid stitches vs the traditional lacey and open stitches. But wait there’s more – the designer also chose non-traditional doily colors – purple and grey – to great effect!
8. Andromeda Doily
Feast your eyes on the beautiful Andromeda Doily. The beautiful shaping on this design reminds me of a cat’s eye. It is so refreshing to see a doily in a shape that isn’t round and you can tell that the colors have been chosen with a keen designer’s eye. Simply lovely!
I never knew how badly I wanted to make a purple doily until I saw this one! Arcanoweave (such a creative name!) is the 2nd part of a magnificent doily design worked in 3 parts. The thing that really stands out about this one for me is the cable work in the first few rows of the lighter purple color. Wow, just wow!
10. July Mandala
Designer: Lifestyle by Ella
You can try a lot of different doily techniques in this sampler-style mandala. I love all the shapes in this one – ovals for the flower petals, squares, and diamonds too! The repeating pattern of colors – pink, green, yellow, and blue – really helps to pull the design together.
11. Square Lace Doily
Designer: Handmade by Raine
Who knew that doilies could be square? I love the X in the middle of the square and the contrasting white color on the last round. The best part about this splendid square lace doily design is that you can easily make it as big or as small as you’d like!
12. Seashell Doily
Designer: Handmade by Raine
I can’t get enough of this stunning seashell doily! It’s made with a technique called fractal crochet (sometimes called math-based crochet) which sounds super intimidating but it’s really just double crochet and chain stitches. I think this design would also look splendid in green because it reminds me of a palm frond.
13. Doily with Tulips
A pretty wheel of tulips might be wishful thinking this time of year but, hey, maybe it will help spring get here sooner! This classic white doily with tulips would make an excellent addition to your collection and it looks great in bright pink too.
14. Susie Doily
Designer: Irina Maleeva
Maybe I’m just hungry but the middle of this attractive doily looks like a pizza to me. Or maybe a pie. Either way, I really like how different and unique the Susie Doily is. The last few rows are particularly striking, with all those spokes.
15. Pink Pineapple Doily
Designer: American Thread Company
With size 30 thread and a #12 hook, this showstopping piece measures 11 ½ inches across. The pink pineapple doily is also lovely in white and other colors. One of the projects on Ravelry uses gold and red thread and it’s really quite something!
